Thanks for the notation Clement, I didn't think you needed a chain when three <46> pairs appear in one row

I probably should have explained it---- If a=7, x=<46>, b=7, c=1, x=<46>

A pair of cells containing <19> can go four ways 1:1 1:9 9:1 9:9

W wings prove that if one cell is 1 the other is 9 and vice versa, but always consider what would if happen if both were 1 or ...

Very good explanation.

For years I have always thought W wings as contradictory (as well as other stuff)

In this puzzle, r5c7 <> 1 as by using the <19> pair this would lead to no < ...

Same UR, but different elimination
UR 2,8 in r46c57 and -3 -5 in r4c4

(or -3 in r9c5 would also work for the UR too)

Thanks, dongrave! I can solve these puzzles in my usual way, but if I know that wings can be used I try that as well.

I kicked off with the 35-1 XY as you say, then a 15-2 XY but missed the X wing ...

Gianni, aren't these VH puzzles meant to be solvable with X, XY or XYZ wings?

I think it's always good to look at solutions in different ways.

The ANP by Mogulmeister could also be looked at as:

In box 1 it doesn't matter where you put <9> "a" is always &l ...

Not sure I understand swordfishes, but a <179> ANP in gf

If the Pair <79> in gf is true then e=8, d=6, c=4, b=1
If the Pair <79> in gf is false then g=1
either way a is not < ...

Correct, the XYZ 148 doesn't solve it straight away, you would need another step

You could look at my contradiction as a chain :

If a=8, e=14, x=1, c=3, b=8, a=1 so a is not 8 and must be 1

I was drawn to a potential 23-6 XY wing (abc)

Not to be, but if x=2, a + c would both be <6> and lead to a contradiction

so r7c8=8 to solve
