A reasonably well hidden x-wing does it

(x-wing on "7" in cols 3 and 8, removes 7 from r5c1, r8c29)

Or ... could it be ... just basics?

confirm: I did the puzzle again and no advanced techniques are needed. |

I used an x-wing on <7> to finish it off - but now after reading the other posts I'm gonna have to try again. Deja vu from last week eh !

Actually, I did enjoy this one. I thought it had the more difficult basics of a “Hard” puzzle (triples and quads). Often the VH’s are “Easy” ones with a wing thrown in. I'm not convinced this one can be done without a wing. Like Arnold - "I will be back"! |

It was a "funny" experience for me. I was doing the basics, and doing more basics, when I realized that the puzzle was resolved without any advanced techniques. I assumed that I had made an incorrect but lucky move so I solved it a second time with the same result! What a "bummer"

Hm, the x-wing is there right from the beginning (well, after the hidden single 5 in r6c3 removes the third "7" in column 3), so it is hard to say when exactly I used it...

But the solution does not depend on a wing:

There are 2 naked quads 1239 row 1 and 1279 col 1.

Soon after a box/line in box 4 restricts 1 to row 5, there is a naked triple 7,8,9 in column 2 takes out 7 in r89c2, which makes r8c3=7 and the x-wing is gone... |

My commitment was to do this like my peers - with no VH steps. My peers were right - no VH bits are needed - but it sure took me a long time to complete. And that was after cheating and looking at Nataraj's last post.

Since I originally completed this very quickly using an x-wing - there has to be a moral there somewhere. |

				| Maybe I missed something, as basics didn't do it for me. But two URs took care of it. |

Same here. Moral: When you find them ... take them |

				| After basic eliminations using triples, quads, lone numbers, box line intersections etc., an X-Wing with candidates of 7's appears in r6c29 and r9c29 elimianatng the 7's in the respective columns solving the puzzle. |

After placing the <5> in C3, I saw the X-wing on my first scan of the columns. That places <1> in R5C1, and you are done.

Without the X-wing:

Hidden triple <468> in R1B2. Hidden pair <78> in C8. Hidden pair <12> in c2.

And here, we have a problem. If you use a very obvious "very hard" X-wing, the puzzle falls apart. If not, the solution is a long journey. Much harder, I believe.

Not sure I want to submit to your judgement.

Neither do I agree.

				| Neither my husband nor I had to do anything except the basics to solve this one. No x-wings or URs, nor even any bug removal. I think it was more like a hard than a very hard. |
