The January 30 DB is atypically easy.

Solution: x-wing (3)

I saw the 3 x-wing but still could not solve it. I see where the 279 wing is but am not sure what to do with it. Confused

After basics:
Code:

| 25679 2379  2359  | 38    3578  1     | 4     238   2689  |
| 279   8     1     | 6     4     37    | 5     23    29    |
| 56    4     35    | 9     358   2     | 16    7     168   |
+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+
| 3     1     29    | 7     29    5     | 8     6     4     |
| 45    6     45    | 13    123   8     | 127   9     127   |
| 8     29@   7     | 4     129   6     | 12    5     3     |
+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+
| 79@   5     389   | 2     367   4     | 679   1     678   |
| 127   27#   6     | 18    178   9     | 3     4     5     |
| 1479 37-9   3489  | 5     1367  37    | 2679  28    2678  |
+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+

The X-wing is in R37. It takes out 3 in five cells in C35. From then it is just singles. Hint: After the X-wing, solve R5C4.

The XY-wing is a little trickier. It is marked, and takes out 9 in R9C2. That causes a pair 37 in R9. Then you can solve 9 in C79. Then, a hidden pair 29 in C3, and a hidden triple 578 in C5. Solve R3C3, and it is then only singles.

I suppose we can discuss if a hidden triple is a "basic" move.

Thanks Keith, I can't believe that I didn't take out the 3 in r5c5! Thanks also for your explanation of the wing. Very Happy
