Auburnmom,

Please post the original puzzle. The one you have posted is not valid. For example, it has ten rows!

Even if I correct what seems to be your typo, R1C2 cannot be 48.

I'll take a closer look, but in the grid you posted, take a close look at 4.

Step 1:
Quote:
A Skyscraper

Step 2:
Quote:
A W-wing

From the original puzzle, after basics:
Code:
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 2    49   8    | 14@  3    6    | 5    7    19   |
| 49#  3    7    | 2    5    14@  | 8    6    19   |
| 5    6    1    | 7    9    8    | 3    24   24   |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 7    5    3    | 19   4    19   | 2    8    6    |
| 6    8    4    | 5    7    2    | 1    9    3    |
| 1    2    9    | 8    6    3    | 4    5    7    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 489  49   6    | 3    1    459  | 7    24   2458 |
|-48-9 1    5    | 49#  2    7    | 6    3    48   |
| 3    7    2    | 6    8    45   | 9    1    45   |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
The pattern marked is both a kite / skyscraper on 4 and a W-wing 4-9. Solving R8C1 as 8, and the puzzle.

There are other moves: A UR 24, coloring (kites, skyscrapers) on 4 leading to a BUG+1, ...

Logically, a skyscraper and a kite are the same thing. After basics:
Code:
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 2    49@  8    | 14@  3    6    | 5    7    19   |
| 49   3    7    | 2    5    14   | 8    6    19   |
| 5    6    1    | 7    9    8    | 3    24   24   |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 7    5    3    | 19   4    19   | 2    8    6    |
| 6    8    4    | 5    7    2    | 1    9    3    |
| 1    2    9    | 8    6    3    | 4    5    7    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 489  49#  6    | 3    1    -459 | 7    24   2458 |
| -489 1    5    | 49#  2    7    | 6    3    48   |
| 3    7    2    | 6    8    45   | 9    1    45   |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
Note the strong links on 4 in C24. In R1, at least one of the cells @ is false. (The link in R1 can be strong or weak.) So, at least one of the cells # is true. The cells # are pincers on 4, making two eliminations as shown.

Now, check out Havard's classic explanation. The link is in this thread:

You'll have this down in no time!

Best wishes,

Keith
