Here is the grid after all the basics that I could find. Lloyd's X wing does not lead to a 478 xy wing from my grid. After some eliminations from the X wing, a strong link of 7s opened up in C5 in Box 8. Then this strong link of 7s in box 8, buddying (on row 9) with the strong link of 7s in Box 7, allows me to eliminate the 7 in R7C6. Then Lloyd's 478 XY wing opened up for me.
This was a tough puzzle.

There is a triple in row 3
There is also a skyscraper on 4 in rows 2 and 9 removing the 4 in r3c5 and r7c6 solving the puzzle.

The X-Wing takes out the 1 in r17c6.
Then a 78 pair in r1 takes out the 7 in r1c5.
The 378 triple that Dan mentioned takes out the 7 from r3c5.
Now the only 7s in c5 are in box 8, taking out the 7 from r7c6, leaving 48 in that cell as the third cell needed for the XY-Wing.

Perhaps I should have mentioned the several basic moves required between the two VH moves.

It was indeed a tough puzzle - made even harder by the lack of a hint from Dar es Salaam.

Skyscraper on 4 in rows 2 and 9 is all that is necessary.

Yes, an excellent puzzle. Lot's of not-very-basic "basics".

I resonate with LloydB's first post, Marty's elaboration, and Lloyd's postcript.

(As always, I solved the puzzle before even looking at this page. But I was a few days behind being able to make an original post. I'm not usually able to consume one puzzle per day on the day of the puzzle, and only rarely can I compete with Dar es Salaam!)

Congratulations to all solvers, including the skyscraper climbers.
