I come up with a somewhat different grid after using various straight forward operations. For example I was able to get rid of several 4's in the 5th Box, plus some 9's in Rows 5 and 9. The only problem I have now is I can't seem to get any further. Need help! I don't see how one can get a 189 xy pivoted on R5C9. Would appreciate some help. Many thanks,

Jeff,
In the position you posted, there is a 12-9 XY-wing in C78. A further advanced step is then still required.

I had overlooked that the 9 could be eliminated in R3C7 through the 129 xy wing. Thanks,

excess fours Embarassed , but I can't for the life of me see how to get rid of those 9s
in r5 and 9 .....

Help!

Hugh

Hi Hugh, The 9's that Jeff mentioned eliminating in r5 and 9 have already been eliminated in the starting diagram. The 9's in r5 and 9 of the starting diagram form an x-wing that eliminates the other 9's in r5 and 9. The excess 9's in the starting diagram won't be eliminated until after you apply both of the XY-wings that you pointed out.

Ah, I see. I wasn't looking for wings!

Thanks
