After spotting an XY-chain length 5, starting with number 8 in [R3C2] => [R2C3=9] => [R2C8=1] => [R6C8=6] => [R6C1=1], which eliminates the numbers 1 in R1C1,R2C1,R3C1 and R5C2, I noticed when the puzzle seizes up, I missed the XY-wing R4C2(pivot), which has the same eliminations like the XY-chain.
So is it rare or normal that two strategies overlap each other, with the exact same eliminations?

Code:

[code]
+--------------+-------------+----------+
| 136 146  47  | 2   136 9   | 17 5   8 |
| 156 2    89  | 168 7   568 | 3  19  4 |
| 135 18   79  | 4   138 58  | 2  79  6 |
+--------------+-------------+----------+
| 7   68   58  | 3   568 1   | 4  2   9 |
| 9   1468 458 | 68  568 2   | 16 3   7 |
| 16  3    2   | 7   9   4   | 8  16  5 |
+--------------+-------------+----------+
| 8   57   6   | 19  14  3   | 59 47  2 |
| 4   57   1   | 69  2   67  | 59 8   3 |
| 2   9    3   | 5   48  78  | 67 467 1 |
+--------------+-------------+----------+
[/code]

I see jLo just beat me to the reply after I clicked the "Post Reply" button. The more bivalues, the more possible paths. An XY-Wing is just the shortest XY Chain (other than a locked pair). Since this was the only step needed to solve this puzzle, it didn't seem VH to me.

By the way... how did you eliminate <8> from R3C3?

He's got a 1358 quad in row 3.
