Also needed two X-wings, probably the same as Earl.

Actually, I just needed the one - for 3s in C34.

I can't even get that far...how did you get rid of the 4's & 7's in the 4th row? I'm stuck here:

Code:

+----------------+---------------+-------------+
| 125679 8    23 | 3679 1679 137 | 4  1569 156 |
| 15679  1567 69 | 679  8    4   | 3  2    156 |
| 1369   136  4  | 5    1369 2   | 7  169  8   |
+----------------+---------------+-------------+
| 39     2    5  | 8    39   6   | 1  47   47  |
| 8      4    69 | 279  179  157 | 26 56   3   |
| 367    367  1  | 4    23   35  | 9  8    256 |
+----------------+---------------+-------------+
| 4      36   8  | 1    236  9   | 5  67   267 |
| 26     9    23 | 367  5    37  | 8  14   14  |
| 15     15   7  | 26   4    8   | 26 3    9   |
+----------------+---------------+-------------+

Can someone enlighten me on the C34 notation? What does that mean...columns 3 & 4?

I was also stopped at the same spot. Also, how were the 1's eliminated in row 2?

Yes.

Without knowing sdq_pete's candidate grid it's hard to know how he solved those two cells but it's not necessary to have them solved to use the X-wing that others referred too.

Same as above.

Shoeless,

If you play the X-Wing on 3 in columns 3 and 4 and make a chain of eliminations, you arrive here:

Code:
+----------------+---------------+-------------+
| 125679 8    23 | 3679 1679 1   | 4  1569 16  |
| 15679  1567 69 | 679  8    4   | 3  2    16  |
| 1369   136  4  | 5    1369 2   | 7  169  8   |
+----------------+---------------+-------------+
| 3      2    5  | 8    9    6   | 1  47   47  |
| 8      4    69 | 279  179  5   | 2  6    3   |
| 367    367  1  | 4    2    3   | 9  8    5   |
+----------------+---------------+-------------+
| 4      36   8  | 1    236  9   | 5  67   267 |
| 26     9    23 | 36   5    7   | 8  14   14  |
| 15     15   7  | 26   4    8   | 26 3    9   |
+----------------+---------------+-------------+

Using the 1 in r1c6 or the 16 pair in column 9, the 47 pair in row 4 is quickly solved.

Just by way of a reply, I went through it again but couldn't now see how I reached that position! Clearly, the strong move is the column X-wing on 3's. This X-wing shouldn't be hard to spot if one searches systematically, but then that goes for any X-construction. In this case I suspect I (subconsciously) discounted the possibility of an X-wing on 3's simply because there so many candidate 3's in the puzzle - clearly a pitfall to avoid in future!

Thanks guys...I just wasn't seeing it. Once you get rid of the 3's in C6 it solves pretty easily.

"Sept 25 VH" should of course read "Sept 26 VH". I guess it is difficult to edit a title for a New Topic posting once it is in place.
