slept in today, but still no posts on today's. hm. No word yet from Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe? Anyway, I'll start the thread...

xwing [on "9" (rows 5 and 7) - made r6c4 into "38" inter alia], so then

xy-wing [pivot 38 - r6c4 just now made into a bivalue - how convenient, removes 9 from r4c3]

and:

xy-wing [pivot r9c8 "12" removes 3 from r4c6 and leaves "9"]

Code:

+-------+----------+------------+
| 9 2 3 | 4  7  8  | 5  16  16  |
| 5 7 6 | 12 29 19 | 38 38  4   |
| 8 1 4 | 5  3  6  | 2  7   9   |
+-------+----------+------------+
| 6 4 8 | 7  29 39 | 1  23  5   |
| 3 5 7 | 28 1  4  | 6  9   28  |
| 2 9 1 | 38 6  5  | 38 4   7   |
+-------+----------+------------+
| 1 3 5 | 9  4  2  | 7  68  68  |
| 4 6 2 | 13 8  7  | 9  5   13  |
| 7 8 9 | 6  5  13 | 4  123 123 |
+-------+----------+------------+

Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site

... I have 123 at R9C8 and don't see how to get rid of the 3.

I missed the X-wing, but:
Code:
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 9    2    3    | 4    7    8    | 5    16   16   |
| 5    7    6    | 129  29   19   | 38   38   4    |
| 8    1    4    | 5    3    6    | 2    7    9    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 6    4    89   | 7    289  39   | 1    2389 5    |
| 3    5    7    | 289  1    4    | 6    289  28   |
| 2    89   1    | 38-9  6    5    | 389b 4    7    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 1    3    5    | 89a  4    2    | 7    689  68   |
| 4    6    2    | 13   89b  7    | 89a  5    13   |
| 7    89   89   | 6    5    13   | 4    12   123  |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+

Coloring on <9> takes out <9> in R6C4, the resulting XY-wing takes out <9> in R5C4. It ends with a BUG in R9C9.

(I now see coloring is not needed. In the above position, the XYZ-wing <39>-<389>-89> takes out the <9> in R5C4, leading to the BUG.)

As Asellus pointed out, locked candidates gets rid of the 3 in r9c8, at which point the XY-Wing pivoted there finishes it off, as does the BUG+1.

I'm glad to see that we seem to be getting more VHs; nine thus far in 23 days this month. While some have commented that they are not "very hard" to solve, regardless, every one of them has been generating interesting and informative discussions here and constitute the majority of the conversation on the forum.

This isn't fair! I did a skyscraper on 9s - then an x wing on 9s - then an xyz wing - then an xy wing - and now I'm still stuck. I still have a 3 in R9C8.

Damn! I have so many advanced skills and yet I still get stuck on the basic stuff. Actually I still get stuck on the advanced skills - and, as demonstrated here - I still haven't learnt how to read the previous posts.
Nonetheless, this did seem a tad harder than usual VHs - maybe it wouldn't have been with the 3 in C9.

http://www.sudopedia.org/wiki/X-Wing

As to r9c8: look at column 9. The only possibilities for a 3 are in box 9. Since box 9 must have a 3 in column 9, no other 3s can be in that box, thus the 3 at r9c8 must be removed.

P.S. Welcome to the forum.

It would be nice to see more VHs. They seem to come in alternate day spurts and then a drought for about a week. It would be interesting to see the number of views for the different grades. Maybe the easy ones are more popular.

Marty,
I have a possibility for a 3 in r2c8 (1238), r4c8 (2389), r9 c8 (123) so obviously i have a lot to learn here. sometimes i can get the whole puzzle, sometimes i get stuck with 2 or 3 #s everywhere (like this puzzle) and i can't get any further. if you can explain anything to me, i would appreciate it.

thanks for the welcoming nod. I will be travelling for the next day or so but will be back on line then, so please don't think i'm ignoring you.

your help is very appreciated. i've only recently begun sudoku(ing) but i have become addicted and hate when i get to a point and can go no further.

Sheryl, we all had to crawl before we could walk. Keep at it, read as much as you can and don't hesitate to ask questions, there are any number of people here who will be happy to help out.

Good luck.
