Another nice one; an x-y on 4,6,9 solved it for me.

It would solve it for me - if I could find it. Give me a clue - where's the pivot?

I'm actually slower than normal today cos I've been away in Italy for 6 weeks. I didn't bother doing sudokus there - I don't speak Italian.

Welcome back Craig.

This is where I found myself after the basics:

Code:

+-----------+--------------+----------+
| 1  9  6   | 2    3  4    | 5  8  7  |
| 48 5  7   | 1689 69 1689 | 46 3  2  |
| 2  34 348 | 68   5  7    | 1  49 69 |
+-----------+--------------+----------+
| 5  1  2   | 4    7  3    | 9  6  8  |
| 48 7  48  | 69   2  69   | 3  1  5  |
| 3  6  9   | 58   1  58   | 7  2  4  |
+-----------+--------------+----------+
| 6  34 5   | 7    8  19   | 2  49 13 |
| 9  2  34  | 156  46 156  | 8  7  13 |
| 7  8  1   | 3    49 2    | 46 5  69 |
+-----------+--------------+----------+

Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site

This is a good practice puzzle for those who may need to familiarize themselves with some techniques which are commonly discussed here. There are at least two W-Wings on 69, one of which is unproductive. There are at least four XY-Wings involving the 469 combination, two of which involve pincer coloring. There are at least two coloring chains on 4.

Finally, for those who don't use Medusa, but would like to get started, this is also a good one to start with.

I see 2 xy-wings - in the same 4 cells,
2 w-wings 69 with the same pairs - but different strong links,
another w-wing 69 with another cell - linked by the other number,
and a w-wing 46,
that all solve the puzzle.

And an x-wing, that does not solve it.

Marty: As I mentioned, I'm just back from Italy where the wine is cheap and plentiful. Trouble is - it destroys brain cells. Where is the xy wing for 469 on your grid (not the colouring ones).

XY-Wing pivot {4,9}r9c5 with pincers {4,6}r9c7 and {6,9}r2c5 eliminating 6 in {4,6}r2c7 solves the puzzle.

Craig, Clement described one of them. There's also one pivoted in r3c5 with pincers in r9c5 and r2c7. The one pivoted in r2c7 with pincers in r2c5 and r3c8 doesn't make any direct eliminations, but either of the pincers on 9 can be colored to take out 9s. Lots of 469s scattered around the grid.

There's not a web site that translates puzzles from Italian to English?

That's interesting. Can you imagine a forum for sudokus in Roman.
