umm, this dizzying coloring move on 5's
(5)r2c2 = (5)r13c1 - (5)r79c1 = (5)r9c23 - (5)r9c79 = (5)r7c9 - (5)r6c9 = (5)r5c78; r5c2 <>5

Norm, I guess by "strange "hinge/grouped" coloring move on 5" you mean this:
I would not have found this one without your hint. Ugh! |

Just a shortcut to the same effect.
Still I see no way from here
I should have added:
the 79 UR I mentiooned, works like this:
if r9c1=9 then both (SL 7 in col 1) r7c1=7 and (SL 7 row 9) r9c6=7 which is the DP thus r9c1<>9
I guess this one is for the computers or maybe a very clever Medusa approach. I give up... |

using the same groups
(1=9)r8c8 - (9)r2c8 = (9-5)r2c2 = (5)r13c1 - (5)r7c1 = (5)r7c9; r9c7 <> 1
this provides a strong link on 1 in row 7.
and a bi-value cell in r7c9.
don't give up !! |

I don't see the strong link connecting the 59s. What am I missing? |

I'm missing it as well. I get the two cells as being complementary.

===== ===== ===== =====
I think there is a (589) DP in [band 1] that results in [r1c9]<>5, but it doesn't seem to be of any help.
There is also a short chain that leads to [r4c4]<>9, followed by a Kite for [r9c6]<>9, but everything locks up again. |

r3c5 = 9 => r3c59 = (89) => r3c1 =5 => r6c3 = 5 => r5c23 contain 8 => r57c5 = (19) => r3c5 ≠ 9.

From Steve's deduction, we are left with (after a single and a naked pair)
Code: |
*-----------------------------------------------------------*
| 589 2 3 | 59 7 4 | 158 1569 1689 |
| 4 59 1 | 8 2 6 | 3 59 7 |

|-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
| 269 4 7 | 16 5 89 | 128 3 1268 |
| 3 689 89 | 7 189 2 | 158 156 4 |
| 256 1 58 | 36 4 38 | 9 7 268 |
|-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
| 179 3 4 | 2 19 79 | 6 8 5 |
| 169 689 2 | 4 189 5 | 7 19 3 |
| 17 589 589 | 13 6 378 | 12 4 129 |
*-----------------------------------------------------------*
|
An empty rectangle in box 9 kills the 9 in r9c2. A transported xyz-wing with pivot r9c3 then eliminates 8 from r5c5. This cracks the puzzle. |
