Finned X-Wing in 1's r29c14. 1 in r9c6 can be eliminated by the fin principle as it shares the same box as the fin. This solves the puzzle in one step.

23-5 xy wing is another one stepper, though it unravels slower than typical after the xy-wing.

Edit: That was for the Jan 23 puzzle. The Jan 25 puzzle wasn't even available when I posted this.

So much stuff on <1>.

We can eliminate <1> from:
R9C16 by colouring wrap
R3C3 by an ER
R2C4 by skyscraper
etc.

That's an xyz wing. The 489 (or xyz) sees a 49 (xz) and a 48 (xy). Look for the common number that appears three times - in this case a 4. Then if you find another number that sees all three of the 489, 49 and 48 - whack the 4.
Alternatively, you might also wanna look for a better explanation.

Alternatively, although that is indeed an XYZ-Wing, the 489 is a naked triple in box 7, thus eliminating all other 489s in that box and rendering the Wing unnecessary.

Try to assign any candidate in the Grid Reference. You will find that 1 in r9c6 is eliminated.

I don't know if the 1 is eliminated via other means or not. But the four cells mentioned would be an X-Wing were it not for the extra 1 (the "fin") in r7c4.

The Finned X-Wing technique in that grid shown would eliminate the 1 from r9c6.

Let me redeem myself here - it's an ER!!

There are only two <1>s in C1.
If R9C1 is a <1> obviously R9C6 cannot be a 1.
If R2C1 is a <1> then R3C6 is the only <1> left in box2 - ergo R9C6 still cannot be a <1>

Like a new convert, I am seeing skyscrapers everywhere...one took out the 8 from R4C6; then an xyz wing took out the 9 from R6C4; then another skyscaper took out the 1 from R2C4 and solved the puzzle.

Dulaby's recent posts don't make sense (e.g. the 6 is a given in Box 5).

Like Wendy, I'm a new convert to skyscrapers and now I can't believe that I resisted learning about them for so long. (Thanks to Keith and others for helping me with a couple "diabolicals" recently).

I used a skyscraper on 1 to solve this puzzle and now, going back to it, I cannot find any XY or XYZ wings that solve it. Is this a first for DailySudoku? A puzzle that cannot be solved with standard wings alone?

There is a UR, but in terms of this site's usual methods for VH puzzles, an X-wing 8 and a couple of XYZ-wings will do it.

I must be losing my grip. I can see the X wing on 8 (removes 8s from R3C3,6 and R7C4) and I can see XYZ wings on 368 (B2), 458 (B4) and 489 (B7), but none of them produce a result. At least not for me.

Please show me the one/s that I am missing before I slash my wrists! Shocked
