Here's an aligned grid:

Code:
+---------------+--------------+-------------+
| 357  6    457 | 9   1     25 | 48  238 245 |
| 2    59   8   | 3   45    6  | 1   7   459 |
| 3579 1    457 | 457 2457  8  | 49  23  6   |
+---------------+--------------+-------------+
| 1    8    3   | 2   6     4  | 5   9   7   |
| 4    2579 257 | 57  8     59 | 3   6   1   |
| 579  579  6   | 1   579   3  | 2   4   8   |
+---------------+--------------+-------------+
| 6    237  1   | 8   2349  29 | 479 5   249 |
| 57   4    9   | 6   25    1  | 78  28  3   |
| 8    235  25  | 45  23459 7  | 6   1   249 |
+---------------+--------------+-------------+

Claire,

the "5" is not eliminated, but rather the "9" is chosen...

First, the "3"s in r3c1 and r3c3 must be eliminated (the "3"s in box 2 are all in row 3). Then we are done with basics.

There is an xy-wing 49-45-59 (r3c7,r3c3,r2c2) that removes 9 from cells r3c1,r2c9 which leaves 9 in r2c2 as a hidden single (there is no other 9 in box 1, nor in row 2)

Claire.....I'm pretty sure he means 7s in box 2 eliminate 7s in Row3

After basics:
Code:
+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+
| 357   6     457   | 9     1     25    | 48    238   245   |
| 2     59    8     | 3     45    6     | 1     7     459   |
| 359   1     45    | 457   2457  8     | 49    23    6     |
+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+
| 1     8     3     | 2     6     4     | 5     9     7     |
| 4     2579  257   | 57    8     59    | 3     6     1     |
| 579   579   6     | 1     579   3     | 2     4     8     |
+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+
| 6     237   1     | 8     2349  29    | 479   5     249   |
| 57    4     9     | 6     25    1     | 78    28    3     |
| 8     235   25    | 45    23459 7     | 6     1     249   |
+-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+
A 45-9 XY-wing does it in one step.
