A kite in 5 originating in BOX 8 eliminates 5 in r6c8; followed by :
XY-Wing 18 58 15 Pivoted in BOX 8 removing 1 in r2c9 solves it.

I used an XY-Wing (351) with transport of each pincer.

I'm a little stuck here. Trying to break this open with just wings... it should be possible, shouldn't it? Am I not seeing something?

Yes, it should be possible to solve this with wings only, but all three of us have failed to see it. As for myself, I did not check thoroughly for X-Wings, so who knows, maybe there's something there.

zx: The 1 in B8 must be in C4. R9C5 is not 1.

thanks keith... been making that mistake a lot recently. wings are a lot easier to find once boxes are properly swept.

First try yielded an xy-wing (135), got stuck, got tired, and put it away for the night. Next morning 3 quick xy-wings (189,135,and 158) solved it.

Welcome to the forum, kuskey. That seems to happen frequently with both Sudoku and crosswords, put them away and have some success the second time.

The 158 xy wing can also be preceded by an ER for 5 (using C5, Box 9) which makes the same R6C8 elimination as Clement's kite. Maybe kite's and ER's are related.

I just did this puzzle (a little late) and went to the forum expecting to see complaints about how easy it was.

Looking at Keith's 'after basics' grid, there is a one step 158 XY wing pivoted on r9c5 that solves the puzzle in a flash.
