Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site

I did it, but it took me 2 X-wings, 2 XY-wing and loads of XYZ-wings.

Too many to list here - surely someone did it quicker using 'classic'

techniques?

If not this is the most complex we've seen for a while...

What the heck? I surely appreciate Dan's single step solution but since I know that all VH's on this site can be solved using just 'standard' VH moves (i.e. X, XY, and XYZ wings), I always look for that solution and like Hugh, I lost count! (I think it was something like 7 or 8!) Is there a simpler solution just using the standard VH moves? If so, I surely didn't see it! And if not, then I've only got one thing to say - Holy crow! |

using only X, XY, and XYZ wings

I got:

XYZ-Wing 147r1c37,r2c9 => -7r1c8

X-Wing 1c69r29 => -1r2c2,r9c7

XY-Wing 184r1c18,r3c2 => -4r1c3,r3c78

X-Wing 6r29c26 => -6r7c2

XY-Wing 562r7c2,r8c14 => -2r7c4

XYZ-Wing 256r7c28,r8c8 => -5r7c7

XYZ-Wing 168r13c1,r3c4 => -1r3c2

				Pretty amazing in that all seven steps seem to be required.

I usually do solve these puzzles using only the methods known to be required. One man's restriction is another man's challenge.

In the same way, I do not use pencil marks to solve other than this site's "Very Hard" puzzles.

				From the 2 solutions of C9 : r2c9=1 or 7 => r8c1=6; stte

A short interpretation :

 	  | Code: | 	 		  +--------------------+--------------+-----------------+

| (18)     9     47  | 3      2  5  | 47(1)  478   6  |

| 3        156   257 | 4      8  16 | 9      257   17 |

| 15-6(8)  1456  245 | (16)   7  9  | 1245   2458  3  |

+--------------------+--------------+-----------------+

| 9        8     6   | 5      1  2  | 3      47    47 |

| 2        7     3   | 8      9  4  | 6      1     5  |

| 15       145   45  | 7      6  3  | 8      9     2  |

+--------------------+--------------+-----------------+

| 4        256   9   | 26(1)  3  7  | 25(1)  256   8  |

| 56       3     1   | 26     4  8  | 257    2567  9  |

| 7        2     8   | 9      5  16 | 124    3     14 |

+--------------------+--------------+-----------------+

 | 	  [(6=1)r3c4-1r7c4=1r7c7-1r1c7=(1-8)r1c1=8r3c1]-6r3c1=6r8c1; stte |
